Leaders of Oscoda County help to Diminish Poverty

The Oscoda County Poverty Reduction Initiative will be hosting Terrific Tuesday. Terrific Tuesday will be held on February 9, 2010 from 10:30 to 1:30 pm at the Community Center in Mio. Anyone who is facing economic challenges can find help and have questions answered about daily needs. Representatives from different local organizations will address ten key areas. Community members can receive information on housing, financial assistance, health, employment, education, Medicare, homelessness, abuse, and support groups. Free lunch, haircuts, massages, gift bags, and door prices will be offered. Door Prizes range from free oil changes to apparel gift cards.

Recipients of the Together We Can Food Pantry were surveyed and the Poverty Reduction Initiative (PRI) identified major areas of concern. “In December I took surveys to the Together We Can Food Pantry,” stated Andy Wallace, Community-Based Mentoring Program Coordinator, “At the next distribution I was handing out flyers for Terrific Tuesday. These Flyers addressed the needs mentioned a month prior, and people were shocked the information we had gathered, actually led us to do something.”

Terrific Tuesday is sponsored by People for People, a Poverty Reduction Initiative group, River House Inc., Michigan State University Extension, Fairview Mennonite Church, Human Service Coordinating Council, and Department of Human Services.
