The Oscoda County Conservation District Aims High

The Oscoda County Conservation District has now partnered with the USDA Forest Service. Also in partnership with Natural Resource Conservation Service, Michigan State University Extension and Ogemaw Conservation District, they were able to host the annual Pasture Walk at the Schmucker Family farm. “Agricultural business people came to learn about different grazing practices and which crops may yield the most nutrients on an organic dairy farm. The Schmucker family has a composting barn which they utilize for their crops as well as a unique way for organically raising chickens,” Lloyd Troyer stated in the Annual Conversation District report. The Oscoda County Conservation District has provided over 35,000 plants, trees, and bulbs to the community over the past 44 years.

In recent news, the Oscoda County Conservation District is hosting its 44th annual meeting on Saturday, February 20, 2010. This event will be at the Community Center in Mio. Brunch will begin at 11:00 a.m, where it will be followed by the election and presentation. The Conservation District would also like to recognize the late Randy Marzolo as Oscoda County Conservationist of the Year. The meeting will have special speaker Paul Lyden from the USDA Forest Service.

I learned of future events after speaking with Donita Charron, the Conservation District Administrator for Oscoda County. “We have The Grow Show,” she told me excitedly, “it’s an annual spring tree sale.” She informed their will be door prizes, vendors, demonstrations, and free admission. You can go to The Grow Show on May 1srt, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Oscoda County Fairgrounds. They hope to have great success this year and sell many of their forest-related items!
