Career Opportunities: Internships - Jobs - Job Shadows

Types of Career Opportunities

Internship – typically a short, pre-determined length of time, incorporate a variety of tasks and help the intern decide if it is a profession they would like to pursue. May be paid or unpaid. (Many internships may lead to future employment. May be done prior to going to school (such as law school) or while you are in school to see if you would really like to persue that as a career.)

Job – Paid positions where the employee already has the skills necessary to complete assigned tasks.

Part-time Job - Less work hours than full time employment and usually more flexible scheduling since part-time jobs are typically held by teenagers and young adults who have other time obligations, like school.  It is ideal if one has a part-time job related to their career choice so they can get hands-on experience, however, that is not always the case.

Full-time Job – Employees are typically eligible for benefits and work 30-40 hours per week and may be in their career of choice.

Seasonal or Summer Job - A seasonal job may be part-time or full-time, but is only for a designated amount of time.  For example, students make take seasonal full-time jobs during the summer when they are off from school.

Job Shadow – Gives the student one or two days to follow, or shadow, someone in a specific profession. Gives the student an good introduction to what a "day in the life" is like for a person in that profession.

Have an opportunity?

Internships / Jobs

Students and youth in our community are always looking for opportunities and sometimes confuse not knowing about opportunities to mean that opportunities don't exist.

If you have an internship or job to offer, share it today!

Job Shadowing

If you don't have an opportunity to share right now, but are interested in reaching out and mentoring youth in the community, perhaps you could offered a job shadowing opportunity.  Not all adults are meant to be mentors.  If you have the patience and willingness to give back to youth, offer a job shadow opportunity where a youth can shadow you for a day at work, ask questions, and find out more about your career field and expertise.
